Inauguration d'un nouveau Sefer Torah à l'Université de Binghamton

Le Rav Aaron Slonim a commandé un Sefer Torah pour l'Université de Binghamton, il a fait coïncider la date avec les trente ans de l'Université d'Etat de New York. Il a fallu environ un an et demi pour écrire ce Sefer Torah.

 

Le Rav Slonim et son épouse, sont arrivés sur le campus, qui se trouve le long de la rivière Susquehanna près de la frontière avec la Pennsylvanie, à la fin de 1985, et ils ont peu de temps après, ouvert leur Beth Habad.

 

"Notre objectif était de réaliser la volonté du Rabbi. C'était bien avant qu'il y ait beaucoup de Beth Habad sur les campus, nous espérions simplement attirer les étudiants" a raconté le Rav Slonim.

 

Leur objectif a été atteint, ils ont une moyenne de 350 à 400 étudiants qui participent au repas de Chabbat du vendredi soir, ce qui représente 10% de la population juive sur le campus. Des centaines d'autres personnes participent aux cours, aux programmes ciblés et aux événements de vacances. Un dîner annuel appelé "Chabbat 1800" multiplie par plus de trois, ce nombre.

 

Le Rav Slonim souligne que le Sefer Torah agit comme un lien entre le passé et l'avenir. Il a décidé de commander ce Sefer Torah pour cette date anniversaire, parce que "la Michna dit que trente ans est la force de l'âge".

 

"Ce n'est pas seulement un autre Sefer Torah", a-t-il déclaré. "C'est une Torah qui englobe des milliers et des milliers d'étudiants juifs qui sont passés par le Beth Habad au cours des trente dernières années."
